The world's first study of manicure dust by SheMax

SheMax, a Ukrainian manufacturer of professional beauty salon equipment, conducted the world's first official study on manicure dust.The company collaborated with the Oles Honchar Dnipro National University.


How the research was done

The study was led by:

- PhD in Technical Sciences Oleksii Polishko
- Associate Professor Volodymyr Polonskyi

The analysis took place at the chemistry department and focused on:
- particle shape and size
- their behavior in the air during a working day



Why manicure dust is dangerous
- Dust contains particles <5 µm that enter the lungs and cause inflammation, allergies, bronchitis, asthma, and chronic illness.
- Particles remain airborne, especially in poorly ventilated rooms.
- Toxic compounds were also found: methacrylate, formaldehyde, toluene, phthalates.


Composition and fractions

After 8 manicures, samples were analyzed:

    - 1.1% – large particles >500 µm

      - 37.1% – particles 250–500 µm

        - 61.8% – fine dust <250 µm (most dangerous)


        Minimum size: 15.7 µm | Most likely: 91.05 µm
        Particles have sharp, jagged edges that damage mucous membranes and skin.


        Dust concentration in the air

        - Highest concentration: near the client’s hands and technician’s head
        - Dust remains in the air even 30 minutes after the procedure
