The first official research project on the properties of manicure dust was conducted by the SHEMAX company.
The world's first study of manicure dust by SheMax
SheMax, a Ukrainian manufacturer of professional beauty salon equipment, conducted the world's first official study on manicure dust. The company collaborated with the Oles Honchar Dnipro National University.
How the research was done
The study was led by:
- PhD in Technical Sciences Oleksii Polishko
- Associate Professor Volodymyr Polonskyi
The analysis took place at the chemistry department and focused on:
- particle shape and size
- their behavior in the air during a working day
Why manicure dust is dangerous
- Dust contains particles <5 µm that enter the lungs and cause inflammation, allergies, bronchitis, asthma, and chronic illness.
- Particles remain airborne, especially in poorly ventilated rooms.
- Toxic compounds were also found: methacrylate, formaldehyde, toluene, phthalates.
Composition and fractions
After 8 manicures, samples were analyzed:
- 1.1% – large particles >500 µm
- 37.1% – particles 250–500 µm
- 61.8% – fine dust <250 µm (most dangerous)
Minimum size: 15.7 µm | Most likely: 91.05 µm
Particles have sharp, jagged edges that damage mucous membranes and skin.
Dust concentration in the air
Using the BENETECH GM8804 detector:
- PM2.5 and PM10 exceed safe levels during a manicure
- Highest concentration: near the client’s hands and technician’s head
- Dust remains in the air even 30 minutes after the procedure
With vs Without SheMax Style PRO extractor
- Extractor significantly reduces dust during and after work
- Without it, a dust cloud forms in the breathing zone
Recommendations for nail technicians
- Use desktop or built-in extractors (SheMax)
- Change masks after each client or every 2 hours
- Ventilate the room
- Install a germicidal lamp
- Avoid toxic materials
- Strengthen immunity, quit smoking, consult a doctor if symptoms appear
Conclusion:
- Manicure dust is a real health risk.
- The solution: high-quality extractors like SHEMAX + hygiene standards.
